CEREC Crowns and Bridges
One of our goals at White Bear Smiles is to make life simpler for each and every one of our patients. We do this a number of ways, from providing dental care to every member of the family to offering convenient appointment times.
Our patients particularly appreciate the simplicity of getting custom-made crowns in a single appointment, a service we can offer thanks to CEREC.
CEREC stands for either CEramic REConstruction or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, depending on who you ask. CEREC is an exciting new innovation that allows us to create crowns and other restorations right here in the office while you wait. In most cases, we can eliminate the most unpleasant parts of getting a crown, from the goopy and uncomfortable impressions to the less functional temporary restoration you used to have to wear while you waited for your restoration to be crafted in an off-site lab.
How Does CEREC Work?
Once we determine that a crown or other restoration is needed, Dr. Anderson will prep your teeth accordingly. When your tooth is prepped, we’ll take “digital impressions” using a special type of camera that sends the information directly to the CEREC software. Dr. Anderson can then fine tune the design so that your restoration will fit securely and blend in beautifully with the rest of your teeth.
At that point, the information will be sent to the milling unit, which gets to work creating your restoration from a piece of solid dental ceramic. We’ll carefully color-match the restoration so that it doesn’t stand out. We believe people should admire your beautiful smile and not your restorative dentistry!
Once the restoration is created, Dr. Anderson will check the fit and appearance and if he’s satisfied, cement the restoration in place. And that’s it! You’ll be free to leave with your new restoration.
Crowns & Bridges
Two of the restorations we create most often are crowns and bridges. Crowns are an incredibly versatile restoration that allows us to repair damaged teeth and replace missing teeth as part of a dental implant system. We can also replace missing teeth with a bridge, which is cemented into place using crowns affixed to the adjacent teeth. The pontic, or replacement tooth, then literally “bridges the gap” to fill in the space.
While both bridges and crowns can be made from a range of materials, we adhere to the philosophy that dentistry should blend in and not stand out. The dental-grade ceramic we use in our CEREC system looks remarkably like natural enamel and is highly durable.
Caring for Restorations
Even though restorations can’t get cavities like natural teeth, it’s still important to take good care of them. A restoration can’t prevent gum disease, and the rest of your teeth can certainly still get cavities!
Dr. Anderson will advise you on any changes to your brushing routine (a dental bridge does require some extra care). It’s also important to continue visiting our White Bear Lake dental office on a regular basis so that we can clean your teeth, inspect your dentistry for any issues, and perform a comprehensive examination. These preventive visits are key to keeping most common dental problems at bay and catching as early as possible any new problems that develop
