Gum disease, or Periodontal disease, is an infection of the tissues that surround our teeth and hold our teeth in place. According to the Centers of Disease Control, almost half of American adults have some form of gum disease. Gum disease is typically caused by poor oral hygiene habits that allow plaque (a film of sticky bacteria), to build up on teeth.
Symptoms of gum disease include:
- bad breath
- red or swollen gums
- loose teeth
- receding gums
- painful chewing
- tender or bleeding gums
Periodontal disease increases the body's overall inflammatory response, in turn aggravating other diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, or arthritis. That's why it is so important to keep up regular dental visits and cleanings, as well as brushing and flossing properly.
