As a parent, it’s your responsibility to teach and encourage your kids to take excellent care of their smiles beginning early in life. If you have a young child, one of the best things you can do for their long-term health is to help them establish good brushing and flossing habits while they’re still young.

But just how do you convince a child to get excited when it’s time to brush their teeth? Below, our White Bear Lake dentist outlines a few suggestions for getting your child more on board with oral hygiene habits:

Let Your Child Choose Their Toothbrush and Toothpaste

There are so many fun toothbrushes out there for children—featuring everything from cartoon characters to sparkly handles to musical timers. Tubes of toothpaste, too, come in fun flavors and colors to appeal more to children.

As long as your child’s toothpaste contains fluoride and you’re supervising the amount they use, let your child have free rein! We suggest taking them shopping and giving them the chance to pick out a toothbrush and toothpaste tube, especially for them.

Make Brushing a Fun Family Activity

Who said toothbrushing has to be boring? Rather than standing in the bathroom doing nothing but brushing your teeth for several minutes, you can help your kids enjoy brushing their teeth by turning it into a fun mini activity!

Grab the whole family and use your tooth brushing time as a chance to watch a few minutes of a show or movie, play a quick round of a board game, or even have a dance party.

Find an Inspirational Character

Younger children learn best by example, so what better way to encourage tooth brushing than to brush along with a likable cartoon character? YouTube has countless tooth brushing videos created by dentists or dental health professionals at companies like Oral-B and Colgate. Many children’s shows also feature episodes or snippets about taking care of your smiles—all you need to do is find one your child enjoys watching!
