Is it safe to have dental work while pregnant?

Yes, it is safe to undergo most dental work during pregnancy. In some cases, it is even essential due to hormonal changes, which put you at risk for gum disease. Gum disease can lead to premature labor and low birth weight.

Many moms-to-be visit us during their second trimester for a checkup and teeth cleaning. This is when many feel more comfortable. If the dentist finds a cavity or an emerging infection during this visit, it is perfectly safe to receive treatment.

However, if you are pregnant, please inform the dentist. We can take special precautions, such as using lead aprons for x-rays and rescheduling elective treatments, such as teeth whitening, for after the baby arrives.

Remember, your oral health is directly linked to your overall wellness, including your baby’s wellness. So, general dental care, especially dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings, is important during pregnancy.

In some cases, we reschedule elective treatments until after the baby arrives, especially those requiring specific chemicals or anesthesia.
