At White Bear Smiles, we pride ourselves on providing quality dental care to patients of all ages, but we realize that sometimes the treatment you need can be expensive. We never want you to forego care because of financial restraints, but the reality is that cost is a factor for many people.
If you have the option of getting dental insurance, you might be wondering if it’s worth the cost or if it’s better to rely on other ways to pay.
Let’s take a look at whether dental insurance might be worth it for your unique situation.
Is Dental Insurance Worth It?
For most dental insurance policies, you’ll pay a monthly premium for prescribed coverage. To determine whether you’re getting your money’s worth, it’s essential to consider the following:
- Cost vs. benefit — Dental insurance doesn’t pay for everything; it acts more like a discount plan for certain services. So, you need to weigh the cost of your plan against the coverage. Every plan is different, so you need to find out what’s covered and what isn’t. Many insurance plans have waiting periods and limitations.
- Preventive care — Most dental insurance plans cover 100% of routine cleanings, exams, and x-rays, so if you and your family go to the dentist every six months, you should factor that into your decision. However, if you don’t take advantage of this preventive care, insurance may not be worth it.
- Alternative ways to save — Depending on the coverage that’s available and how healthy your smile is, you could be better off funding a health savings account (HSA) to use when you need dental treatment. That way, you’re not spending money on monthly premiums; you’re only spending money when you need care.
