Root canals have an unfair reputation for being uncomfortable, or even downright painful. Fortunately, modern dental technology and techniques, combined with proper aftercare, allow most patients to recover quickly and with minimal pain. At White Bear Smiles, Dr. Paul Anderson and our caring and compassionate team are here to ensure you heal as smoothly as possible. To that end, here are a few tips to manage and ease discomfort after your root canal.
Take Medications as Directed
After your procedure, it’s important to stay ahead of the pain. Pain medications, whether over-the-counter (such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen) or prescription, can help control inflammation and discomfort. Take them as directed by the manufacturer or your dentist to safely prevent soreness from building up. If you’ve been prescribed antibiotics, make sure to complete the full course to avoid infection.
Be Kind to Your Mouth
For the first couple of days, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and warm (but not hot) soup. Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could irritate the area or damage the temporary filling. You should also avoid chewing on the treated side of your mouth until your permanent restoration is placed.
Additionally, while it’s crucial to continue brushing and flossing as usual, be extra gentle near the treated tooth. A soft-bristled toothbrush and lukewarm salt water rinse can help keep the area clean and comfortable without causing irritation.
Rest and Monitor Your Recovery
Give yourself time to heal by resting and avoiding strenuous activity for at least a day. Swelling or mild tenderness is normal, but if you experience sharp pain, visible swelling, fever, or difficulty chewing, contact us right away. These could be signs of complications that need prompt attention.
Most patients feel significantly better within a couple of days and return to normal very soon after.
